Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a dangerous condition that happens when you breathe in too much carbon monoxide, a poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas. It occurs when CO binds to hemoglobin in your blood, reducing the amount of oxygen that can be carried to your body's cells, causing tissue damage and potentially leading to paralysis, brain damage, or death. Symptoms range from headaches and dizziness to confusion, chest pain, and loss of consciousness, and can be similar to flu-like illnesses.
How it happens
- Incomplete combustion: CO is produced when carbon-based fuels like gas, oil, wood, or charcoal don't burn completely.
- Faulty appliances: This can be caused by poorly installed, faulty, or poorly maintained fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, gas stoves, and fireplaces.
- Other sources: Other sources include car exhaust fumes in an enclosed space, smoke from fires, charcoal barbecues used indoors, and some paint strippers containing methylene chloride.
Symptoms
- Mild symptoms: Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.
- Severe symptoms: Confusion, loss of consciousness, chest pain, muscle weakness, and seizures.
- Chronic exposure: Long-term, low-level exposure can lead to symptoms like memory problems, vision loss, personality changes, and dementia.
- Note: Symptoms can appear to get better when you leave the affected area, but can worsen when you return.
What to do
- Get to fresh air immediately. Go outside or to a place with fresh air right away.
- Call for help. Call emergency services from a safe location.
- Do not stay indoors to call. If you cannot get outside safely, open a window or door and stay near it while you call for help.
